Support us

Why support King Edward VI Almshouses?

As a charity, our aim is to offer accessible, affordable homes to local people on a low income with limited savings. Unlike many almshouses, which provide accommodation mainly for the elderly, the majority of applicants for our accommodation are of working age. They join a unique community where they can stay close to their families, support networks, and places of employment. For many of them, their almshouse flat becomes a safe haven when life feels especially challenging.

We are currently fundraising for Project Crocus, our ambitious plan to expand our capacity to support more individuals in need, by building a development of 16 sensitively-designed, accessible, energy-efficient new properties to replace the existing seven bungalows on Primes Close. You can help us to transform the lives of local people by supporting the Crocus Campaign.

We are truly grateful for all gifts received, no matter what their size

Of course, ensuring that we can maintain high-quality living conditions for all of our residents requires significant, ongoing investment. The 47 homes we manage in Abbey Lane, Primes Close and Freshwell Street are part of a historic setting and require regular care and maintenance.

Your gift will help us to meet these obligations, preserve our heritage buildings, and respond to the increasing need for more affordable homes in the town.

Gifts can be made online via JustGiving. If you would prefer to donate in a different way, or would like your donation to fund something specific, please contact our Business Manager (01799 513914 or business@swalmshouses.org).
