Almshouses in Woman and Home magazine

One of our lovely residents was interviewed about living in an almshouse for the September edition of Woman and Home! The article highlights affordable housing options for women who can’t afford to purchase a house or rent privately. She says that her almshouse flat, where she has lived for 11 years, offers security: “It took a huge amount of pressure off … the building is beautiful and there’s a great sense of community here. It feels like a home for life.”

Nick Phillips, Chief Executive of the Almshouse Association, is also quoted, saying that many people assume that almshouses only serve older people, although that perception is changing: he says, “In Holland, almshouses are even seen as an aspirational place to live among younger people”.

Saffron Walden Almshouses are open to applicants of all ages who live in Saffron Walden or have a strong connection to the town; are on a low income; and have limited savings. When we have vacancies, these are advertised online and in the local press. For more information, please see our Accommodation page.
